Discover Paris

History
A canvas of revolutions and renaissance. Paris began as a Celtic settlement called Lutetia before Roman conquest in 52 BCE. Medieval growth centered on Île de la Cité, crowned by Notre-Dame. The Renaissance brought royal splendor with the Louvre Palace, while the 1789 Revolution birthed modernity. Haussmann’s 19th-century redesign created grand boulevards, and the Belle Époque cemented its cultural dominance as home to Picasso, Hemingway, and Chanel.
Geography
The Seine River serpentines through Paris, dividing it into the Rive Gauche, or Left Bank, and the Rive Droite, or Right Bank. Flat terrain allows iconic vistas from Montmartre’s hilltop Sacré-Cœur to the Eiffel Tower’s iron lattice. Urban forests such as Bois de Boulogne and cobbled alleys like Le Marais coexist within the Périphérique ring road. A temperate oceanic climate means drizzle year-round, with golden autumns.
